The Political Science Department is aims at coordinating the various teaching and research activities related to political science within Sciences po. In close collaboration with three research centres (CEE, CERI, CEVIPOF), the Department is responsible for the teaching programmes at Sciences po Undergraduate College and Graduate Schools, it defines the the guidelines for the recruitment of teachers and participates in career management. Its missions are carried out taking into account the representativeness and balance of the different sub-sectors of the discipline.

The Department currently has the largest number of members, all statuses combined (more than a hundred), within the Permanent Faculty.

After the elections held in November 2019, the departmental leads are Romain Lachat (CEVIPOF), Nathalie Morel (CEE), Laurence Louer (CERI), Emiliano Grossman (CEE), Réjane Sénac (CEVIPOF).
 
Elected for a second term, the current head of department is Frédéric Ramel. He is Full professor of political science and a researcher at CERI. He taught in various universities (Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Université Paris-Sud, Université du Québec à Montréal) before joining Sciences Po in 2012. He was Scientific Director of the Strategic Research Institute of the Ecole Militaire between 2009 and 2013, and one of the founding members of the European International Studies Association. As an IR scholar, his research focuses on strategic and diplomatic studies (from new forms of conflictuality in global commons to the cooperation in international organizations). He coordinates the ANR research program called DATAWAR dedicated to the diplomatic and strategic usages of conflict armed databases in the international realm and the GDR-CNRS-GRAM on multilateral action. His scientific interests take into account the impact of sensitivity in international relations and in particular the role of music and acoustics in global politics.
