Johanna Gautier-Morin Awarded an ERC Grant
Paris, September 3 – Researcher Jonne Bartus Kamphorst (political scientist, CDSP and CEE) and researcher Johanna Gautier-Morin (sociologist, CSO) have been awarded two ERC Starting Grants by the European Research Council. Awarded following a highly competitive selection process, ERC Grants recognize projects distinguished by their excellence, originality, and contribution to understanding major contemporary issues.
Since the European Research Council was established in 2007, 41 projects led by researchers affiliated with Sciences Po have been selected.
“ On behalf of the entire Sciences Po community, I would like to congratulate Jonne Bartus Kamphorst and Johanna Gautier-Morin on receiving their ERC Starting Grants. Each in their respective fields, these two young researchers are receiving magnificent recognition for the scope of their work and its innovative nature. This achievement once again demonstrates the excellence of the research conducted at Sciences Po, which has a global reach.” Luis Vassy, Director of Sciences Po.

Johanna Gautier-Morin, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Sociology of Organizations (CSO), has received an ERC grant for her research project “Inventing the Environment: An Intellectual History of Accounting for Nature in the Global Economy (1930s–2010s).”
This grant will enable her to study how the concept of “environment” has been integrated into analyses of the global economy and why it has gradually come to be defined as a factor of growth rather than as an ecological and social issue. At the intersection of intellectual history, economic history, environmental studies, and political economy, his project aims to rethink the history of prosperity, value, and planetary boundaries.
With a master’s degree in history from EHESS and a master’s degree in music from the University of Paris IV, JGM completed her doctoral dissertation in international history in 2021 at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University Institute of Florence from 2021 to 2024, Johanna Gautier-Morin received ANR Access funding in 2024 through a grant application submitted with the CSO, which enabled her to develop and secure an ERC grant for her INVENT project.
