Biography
Juliette Masquelier is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for the Sociology of Organisations, under the supervision of Marie-Emmanuelle Chessel. Her research focuses on the history of the Catholic world, women's movements and social, religious and political engagement, which she studies through the lens of gender and class issues. Her new project focuses on the study of the production of social categories in religious activist contexts, based on the case of Catholic Action in independent and rural communities (France-Belgium, 1931-1986).
In 2019, she defended her doctoral thesis in history at the Université libre de Bruxelles on the emancipation of women in Catholic organisations in Belgium (1960-1990). As part of her first postdoctoral position as an FNRS research fellow, she then worked on female volunteering and studied the management of motherhood in the Catholic world after the Second World War, through the case of medical consultations for mothers and infants.
Hired as a postdoctoral researcher for the WomenExile project (BELSPO, 2023-2025), she conducted research on the militant commitments of women exiled in Belgium, repression and political expulsions during the interwar period, based on the archives of the Foreigners Police (State Archives in Belgium).
