CRIS Support - CNRS External Researcher Competition

The Centre for Research on Social Inequalities (CRIS) supports motivated candidates each year in preparing for the CNRS Research Fellow (chargé·e de recherche) competitive examination. CRIS (UMR 7049) is affiliated with the CNRS (Sections 39 and 43) and Sciences Po.

Choosing CRIS means joining a research team widely recognized in France and internationally for its work on inequalities and social stratification. A commitment to empirical research, interdisciplinary openness, and a strong international focus are the cornerstones of the center’s scientific policy.

Research at CRIS covers a broad range of themes—including education, urban segregation, social policies, mobility and migration, cultural practices, digital usage, environmental inequalities, and health inequalities—and employs a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Interested candidates are invited to submit their application to the unit director, Carlo Barone, copying the general secretary, Linda Amrani, by November 16, 2026.

The application must include:

• A CV
• A research project description
• A journal article or a thesis chapter
• A letter of intent explaining the choice of CRIS as the host laboratory.

Research projects submitted at this stage do not need to be very long (10 to 12 pages), provided they clearly outline the research questions, theoretical framework, expected scientific contribution, and present the proposed research protocol with sufficient clarity.

The laboratory council will rule on the applications by December 4, 2026, at the latest, and may, if necessary, propose an oral presentation during a team seminar.

If you are considering submitting your application for CRIS support, we encourage you to make contact as soon as possible—ideally in early September—with Olivier Godechot (info.cris@sciencespo.fr, specifying in the email subject: "CNRS Campaign-Olivier Godechot"), CRIS’s CNRS mentor, who can connect you with a researcher from the laboratory to discuss your project before submission. At this stage of the support application process, a written proposal is not required; the goal is precisely to advise you in its preparation.
