The Politics of Public Accountability: Policy Design in Latin American Oil Exporting CountrieThe Politics of Public Accountability contributes to debates on the role of ideas and institutions in policy outcomes. In this book, Fontaine, Medrano Caviedes, and Narváez discuss how resource nationalism causes a deficit of public accountability in oil-producing countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. The authors draw on a small-n comparison of Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, and Brazil cases to examine the causal mechanism linking ideas and policy outcomes through institutional arrangements. Examining policy design, the authors depict the role of the selection and combination of instruments in producing or hindering social and political accountability. This round-table aims at sharing and discussing the books’ findings and contributions for public policy debates. Guillaume Fontaine will make a presentation on the book’s argument and the underlying research. His intervention will be followed by a commentary by Pierre Wokuri and Q&A.
