Healthcare coverage: check your status
From September 2018, the general French social security system is open to all students, free of charge.
When you join the French social security system you will get a French social security number and card (carte vitale (fr.)).
Please note: For students that are not covered yet by the French social security system, a bilingual French and English registration website will be made available in September 2018. Please consult the joining process and required documents (PDF, 205 Ko).
I was not registered as a higher education student in France for the 2018-2019 academic year (including going back to college after a break)
I am covered by the French social security system (general or other)
You are affiliated with the main health insurance system (Caisse primaire d'assurance maladie CPAM), usually that of your parents
I come from a member country of the European Economic Area
- You need to use your European health insurance card (EHIC). Check the reimbursement procedure.
- If you do not possess a European health insurance card, you must join the French system and adhere to the formalities of your local social security office in France (Caisse primaire d’assurance maladie CPAM) by registering online. Check the process (PDF, 205 Ko)
I come from a country outside the European Economic Area
You must join the general French system and adhere to the formalities of your local social security office in France (Caisse primaire d’assurance maladie CPAM).
It is highly recommended that you take out insurance to cover you for the first few months in France until you are officially covered by the French system.
I was already registered as a higher education student in France for the 2018-2019 academic year
Your student social security cover (LMDE or SMEREP) from last year will be automatically transferred to the general French system (CPAM) in September 2019. As soon as you are signed up to the general social security system, set up an online account on the ameli.fr website so that you can check your reimbursements, manage your account and download certificates.
You must declare any change in your status to your local social security office (i.e. Salaried job, leaving France)
Students who are from a country that is a member of the European Economic Area may continue to use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
