Biography

Rony Brauman is the Scientific Advisor for the Master in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action. He is currently Director of Research at the Doctors Without Borders Foundation and also an Assosiate Professor at Sciences Po. A recipient of the Prix de la Fondation Henri Durant, Rony Brauman is a frequent contributer to Alternatives Internationales. He co-founded and directed "Libertés sans Frontières", where his writing focused on under-development, and emphasized the important linkage between autonomy, civil society, democratization, and economic development. Qualified as a medical doctor, Rony Brauman has worked in the field of international medical assistance since 1977. Initially serving as a field physician in developing countries with Médecins San Frontières (France), he gained experience in the provision of medical humanitarian assistance in contexts of wars, refugee and IDP camps. He served as the President of the organization from 1982 -1994. During this period, MSF became recognized as the largest and the most effective transnational not-for-profit medical agency. MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.  Dr Brauman's interests range from ethical issues at stake in the relationships between humanitarianism and politics, to humanitarian discourses and practices primarily in war and natural disaster settings.  He authored several documentary films, essays and books on these matters.
