Biography

Member of the Council of the United Nations University; Member of the European Leadership Network; Co-Convener and Member, Group of Eminent Persons, Comprehensive Test-Ban Organization; Chairperson of the Board, Dialogue Advisory Group, Amsterdam; Board Member, Security Council Report, New York.  Senior Fellow, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation; Vice President, International Institute for Peace, Vienna.

Fmr. Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.  Long UN career in political affairs, peacekeeping, disarmament and management.  Until 2015, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, during which time Ms. Kane was responsible for the planning, negotiating and conducting the chemical weapons investigation in Syria.  She served as the Sherpa for two Nuclear Security Summits and led the United Nations at the Review Conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty in May 2015.

Previous UN posts included Under-Secretary-General for Management with global financial and policy-setting responsibilities, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs with responsibility for all continents/regions except sub-Saharan Africa, Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, with 4,200 military and over 500 civilian staff.  Other postings include New York, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia and Thailand.

Degrees from Bryn Mawr College and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies; Honorary Doctorate from the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, California.
