Terre-mer offers a model of historical narrative that pays close attention to ecological transformations and the links between species, while simultaneously being able to mobilize this perspective to take a fresh look at the nature of twentieth-century states and economies, in both their capitalist and socialist variants. This session of the AIRE seminar will be devoted to a conversation with Bathsheba Demuth on the methodological challenges of her approach and its potential for the practice of environmental social sciences.
Speaker
Bathsheba Demuth is Dean's Associate Professor of History and Environmental and Society at Brown University and a member of the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society.
Her book Terre-mer: une histoire environnementale du Detroit de Bering, recently published in French by Fayard, was celebrated by a multitude of awards.
