Sustainable Finance and New Environmental Markets

Sustainable finance is a rapidly changing field, both in terms of substance and scale: carbon markets are expanding, new markets are about to be launched on biodiversity, water quality and other ecosystem services, and instruments such as debt for nature swaps and catastrophe bonds are gaining in prominence. A new European regulatory framework for green finance integrating these markets is also being implemented. Current regulatory developments will have a profound impact on citizens and businesses over the decades to come.

This training offers an introduction to this new environmental asset class and the growing role of market solutions in our environmental policies. It will examine the benefits and flaws of these mechanisms to assess whether they will achieve their economic, environmental and political objectives.
