Biographie
Manisha Anantharaman étudie l’économie politique au quotidien des transitions écologiques, en analysant la manière dont les projets écologiques redistribuent le travail, le statut social et l’espace selon des critères de classe, de caste et de genre. Situés à la croisée de la sociologie économique et culturelle, de l’économie politique mondiale et des études urbaines, ses travaux retracent comment les idéologies économiques et politiques, les identités socioculturelles et les rapports de pouvoir façonnent la gouvernance environnementale à différentes échelles, des ménages aux villes en passant par le contexte transnational. Ses approches de recherche sont comparatives et ethnographiques ; elles s’appuient sur un travail de terrain de longue haleine mené en Inde et aux États-Unis, ainsi que sur des projets collaboratifs menés en Europe et en Asie du Sud-Est.
Parmi ses publications figurent deux ouvrages : Recycling Class : The contradictions of inclusion in urban sustainability (MIT Press, 2024), qui a reçu des mentions honorables lors des prix du livre décernés par l’American Sociological Association et l’International Studies Association, et The Circular Economy and the Global South (Routledge, 2019). Elle est rédactrice en chef adjointe des revues Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene (UC Press) et Consumption & Society (BUP), ainsi que chercheuse associée au sein du programme « Environnement et société » de Chatham House.

- Circular market-makers. Étude comparative des start-ups, ONG, consultants et organisations internationales jouant le rôle d’intermédiaires entre les marques de l’UE et les secteurs du recyclage, largement informels, des pays du Sud, examinant comment ils définissent la conformité, mettent en œuvre la traçabilité et calculent la valeur.
- Digital Infrastructures for Sustainable Consumption (DISCo). Belmont Forum et Fondation nationale pour la science des États-Unis, 2023-2027. Responsable du lot de travail consacré à la cartographie des plateformes de fourniture numérique et de leurs effets politico-économiques dans cinq pays, et coordination du travail de terrain ethnographique aux États-Unis.
