The importance of selective education has been widely documented. Yet very little is known about the implications of elite college access on the socioemotional development of young adults.
In this study, we address endogeneity of college attendance by employing variations in access to elite colleges induced by differential admission cutoffs across colleges.
Using longitudinal data from the Beijing College Student Panel Survey, we examine the extent to which elite college access impacts students’ socioemotional development.
Our results contribute to scientific and policy debates on the consequences of elite college access and noncognitive skills acquisition among young people in their early adulthood.
