Ses principaux domaines de recherche portent sur la politique chinoise contemporaine (en particulier la politique ethnique) et les perspectives non occidentales des relations internationales. Il est chercheur principal du projet DFG « Contestation intellectuelle du régime multiethnique chinois [Intellectual Contestation over China’s Multiethnic Regime] » (2025-2027) et rédacteur en chef du Journal of Current Chinese Affairs.
