Abstract : One of the main promoters of the rights resistance movement with his colleague, lawyer Xu Zhiyong, Teng Biao has founded advocacy NGOs in the first decade of the twenty first centuries. After the closure of the Open Constitution Initiative (公孟) which militated in favor of the enforcement of the Chinese constitution, he and Xu Zhiyong created the New Citizens Movement (新公民运动)in 2010.
This unofficial association’s objective was to convince people to act as citizens and enforce their rights as guaranteed by the constitution. It organized banquets in various cities, where participants took a pledge to exercise their rights and express their opinions.
Teng Biao will present the development of this movement which disappeared after Xi Jinping came to power.
In 2013, Xu was sentenced to four years in prison, whereas Teng was forced to leave China.
Speaker : Teng Biao, lawyer, co-founder of the New Citizens Movement
