Diplômé de l’université de Sydney, David Camroux a soutenu son doctorat à la Sorbonne en histoire politique (civilisation britannique). Il enseigne à Sciences Po, depuis 1987, et également aux universités de Keio (Tokyo), Yonsei (Séoul) et Malaya (Kuala Lumpur). A Sciences Po, il a été directeur des études et de la recherche au Centre des hautes études sur l'Afrique et l'Asie modernes (CHEAM) de 1994 à 1998, directeur exécutif du Centre Asie-Europe de 1998 à 2004. Depuis 1990 il est chercheur associé au CERI.

Conseiller scientifique et évaluateur de programmes soutenus par la Commission européenne, au Vietnam de 2001 à 2004 et en Chine de 2004 à 2008, puis membre du conseil d’administration du projet PCRD 6, EU-NESCA de 2004 à 2008, David Camroux est maintenant au conseil scientifique du réseau EsiA (European studies in Asia ) de la Fondation Asie-Europe de Singapour . Rédacteur européen et correspondant fondateur à la Pacific Review  de 1994 à 2008, rédacteur en chef adjoint du Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs  depuis 2009, il intervient régulièrement dans les médias sur les questions concernant l’Asie du Sud-Est et l’Australie.

David Camroux est Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes académiques et Chevalier de l'Ordre des arts et des lettres. Sa double formation en histoire et en sciences sociales l’a conduit vers des domaines de recherche, puisant à la fois dans les théories et les méthodes de la politique comparée comme des relations internationales. Au sein du CERI il participe au groupe de recherche : Migrations et relations internationales. Il coordonne la participation du CERI au projet européen Mercury.
