La Dre Elena Butti est une anthropologue urbaine dont les travaux portent sur la jeunesse, la violence institutionnelle, le crime organisé, les mouvements sociaux et l’habitat informel en Amérique latine.

Elle est Chaire Professeure Junior au Centre d’études internationales de Sciences Po Paris et Research Associate au Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding de l’Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement de Genève. Elle est titulaire d’un doctorat de l’Université d’Oxford.

Son premier livre (NYU Press, 2026) propose une enquête ethnographique sur l’engagement d’adolescents au bas de l’économie de la drogue en Colombie. Elle a également mené des recherches sur les marchés du logement informel contrôlés par des acteurs criminels et accueillant des migrants vénézuéliens dans l’un des plus vastes quartiers auto-construits d’Amérique latine, à Medellín. Elle dirige actuellement un nouveau projet comparatif sur le 'juvenicide', dédié à l’analyse des dynamiques d’homicides de jeunes dans cinq grandes villes d’Amérique latine.

Ses recherches ont été soutenues par le UK Economic and Social Research Council, la Swiss National Science Foundation, le Swiss Network for International Studies, l’Independent Social Research Foundation et la Wenner-Gren Foundation.

Elle est membre fondatrice du Research Network on Juvenicide and Social Resistance (JUVIR) et autrice de plusieurs séries photographiques ethnographiques ainsi que de films participatifs. Elle possède en outre une solide expérience dans le secteur humanitaire.
