Dominique Cardon, Sylvain Parasie, Donato Ricci and the Sciences Po Atelier de cartographie

Digital technology pervades our daily lives: through physical objects such as the mobile phone, the computer and the smartwatch, but also through the media we consume — the photo we look at, the music we listen to — and the interfaces that let us handle and share them. Digital technology is relatively young on the long timescale of history, even though the computation it rests on is very old. Yet for nearly half a century it has been transforming our societies — our gestures, our habits, our relationships with others — unevenly from one region to the next.

The Atlas du numérique is the third title in the “Atlas” series from Presses de Sciences Po. It is the result of a collective effort: Dominique Cardon, Sylvain Parasie and Donato Ricci (médialab, Sciences Po) led the way in defining the table of contents and writing most of the texts. Alongside them, the Atelier de cartographie co-designed and produced half of the visualizations. The team drew on the skills and knowledge of other médialab colleagues and other partners (writing, advice, access to original data…).

“A fascinating experience […]. In 128 pages you learn far more than you would scrolling for 128 hours on your phone.”

Nicolas Demorand, 80 secondes, France Inter, 26 October 2023

Original (French): « Une expérience passionnante […] On y apprend en 128 pages beaucoup plus de choses qu’en scrollant en 128 heures sur son téléphone portable. »

“A book teeming with information that, among other things, helps to move past some stubborn myths about the digital world.”

Marine Protais, L’ADN, 20 October 2023

Original (French): « Un livre fourmillant d’informations, qui permet entre autres de dépasser certains mythes tenaces sur le numérique. »
