Workshop: Economic Perspectives on Immigration - January 22ndWhat is the impact of immigration on the economy? How do economists evaluate this impact? In light of current events, the Department of Economics is pleased to be hosting a timely day-long workshop dedicated to thinking about the many dimensions in which immigration may matter and discussing potential consequences for policy-making. In this workshop, various papers will be presented that think about how immigration affects the labor market, whether there is a link between immigration and crime, how immigrants integrate into the host society, how well the society accepts and hosts the new immigrants and many related topics. The final panel discussion will bring together academics and policy makers to bridge the experience and knowledge coming from both sides. Keynote Speaker: Christian DUSTMANN (UCL and CReAM) Chair: Roberto GALBIATI (Sciences Po) Organizers: Quoc-Ahn Do, Roberto Galbiati, Joan Monras, and Jean-Marc Robin. Link to programme (PDF)

The article, joint with coauthors Stefano DellaVigna (UC Berkeley), Brian Knight (Brown) and Eliana La Ferrara (Bocconi), was published in the January issue of the AEA's American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. The Highlight, titled "Do firms lobby politicians by patronizing their businesses? The case of Berlusconi's media empire", underscores the originality of the work which focuses on the indirect lobbying of politicians through business proxies: «Most research on the role of money in politics has focused on direct contributions to politicians to finance their electoral campaigns. But politicians with substantial business holdings (such as Silvio Berlusconi) have an additional conflict of interest… ». It concludes that: « the large estimates of political benefits calculated in this paper certainly invite more scrutiny of these arrangements » and notably in the U.S. context.
