Interview with Andrej MIJAKOVIC, PhD student in Economics

Andrej MIJAKOVIC

Andrej MIJAKOVIC, PhD student in Economics, European University Institute :

“…You have the opportunity to get to know faculty members and students outside of your organization”

Could you please shortly introduce yourself and tell us more about your area of research?

I am a second-year PhD student at the European University Institute. My research interests broadly cover behavioral macroeconomics and international finance.

You are one of the first users of the CIVICA ESR Courses Catalogue. What has motivated you to participate in the CIVICA program and to register for the “Numerical Methods” class at Sciences Po?

The CIVICA network offers a broad range of courses that goes beyond what a single department can offer. I had just picked up Julia as a programming language but lacked any formal training in it. Florian Oswald’s course in Numerical Methods offered a great opportunity to develop those skills further.

What was your overall experience with these courses?

I would definitely do it again. The course was very insightful and administratively, everything was well organized. The course in Numerical Methods was probably particularly suited to the virtual format due to the strong emphasis on coding.

Based on your experience, would you recommend other Early Stage Researchers to attend CIVICA courses, seminars or workshops at other CIVICA partner universities? Why?

Absolutely. If you find a course that covers topics you would otherwise not see, I can only recommend signing up. The process is quick and easy and you have the opportunity to get to know faculty members and students outside of your organization.
