Gaillard, Emmanuel

Emmanuel Gaillard is a Professor of Law at Sciences Po Law School in Paris and Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School. From 1986 to 2012, he was a Professor of Law at Paris XII University. He is also a member of the Faculty of the Master in International Dispute Settlement (MIDS) at University of Geneva.

He was the first President and one of the co-founders of the International Academy for Arbitration Law (Arbitration Academy). He chairs the International Arbitration Institute (IAI).

Professor Gaillard also is a prominent practitioner in the field of international arbitration, acting both as counsel and arbitrator. Through his practice, extensive writing and teaching, he has contributed to the shaping of contemporary international arbitration law. He has published widely in the area of international arbitration, in French and in English. He is a co-author of Fouchard Gaillard Goldman on International Commercial Arbitration, a reference treatise in the field, a second and fully revised edition of which is underway. He also published, in English and in French, Legal Theory of International Arbitration, the first essay on the theory of international arbitration based on his 2007 Course at The Hague Academy and now also published in Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Hungarian and Portuguese. In 2010, Professor Gaillard was appointed as expert by UNCITRAL for the drafting of the UNCITRAL Guide on the New York Convention, along with Professor George Bermann from Columbia University. The Guide will be published in early 2014.

Emmanuel Gaillard teaches and researches in the area of international commercial arbitration, international investment arbitration, and private international law.

Éminent spécialiste du droit de l'arbitrage dont il a largement contribué au développement et à l'évolution, Emmanuel Gaillard a notamment publié les Aspects philosophiques du droit de l'arbitrage international (2008) et La jurisprudence du CIRDI (deux volumes, 2004 et 2009). Il est en outre co-auteur, avec Fouchard et Goldman, du classique Traité de l'arbitrage commercial international (1996) dont il prépare une nouvelle édition.

Nommé en 2010 par UNCITRAL comme expert, il participe avec Geogre Bermann (Columbia Law School) à la rédaction du UNCITRAL Guide on the New York Convention qui sera publié début 2014.
