In July 2019, Sciences Po opened its doors to 122 high-school students from around the world for the third edition of the Pre-College Programme.

See some of the moments captured during the session in the 2019 Pre-College Programme photo album.

Here are some highlights from their experience with the Summer School:

Discovering University Life

Students devoted three weeks in July to the intensive study of social sciences, with elective courses in French language or a social sciences discipline. Through a combination of Master Classes and tutorials, students delved into Sciences Po’s core subjects, such as international relations and political science through discussion of current events and major world issues. Through the mentorship of Sciences Po professors and researchers, students were introduced to higher education methodology and challenged to meet university standards during their final group presentations. They also had the chance to study on Sciences Po’s exceptional historical campus in Reims and on the flagship Paris campus.

Meeting International Students

With participants coming from various global backgrounds and perspectives, the Pre-College Programme is truly an international experience.  Reflecting the multiculturalism of the entire Sciences Po community, the 2019 student cohort represented 37 different nationalities and 35 countries of studies - from France, Singapore and the USA to Brazil, South Africa, Qatar, India and the UK.

Attending Master Classes and Electives

Students attended six conferences led by Sciences Po professors and researchers, to discuss current issues such as international law, migration issues, peace-building and sustainable development. Learn more about the 2019 Master Classes.

They also had the chance to choose one elective course to delve into a subject of particular interest, such as international negociations, migration, gender, or to study French as a foreign language. Learn more about the 2019 elective classes.

Exploring France

While the academic programme was intense, the Pre-College Programme made time for extracurricular activities. The first two weeks of the programme were spent in the city of Reims, where students toured by day the renowned Reims Cathedral, built in 1275, and attended the Cathedral light and music show by night. Students also went on kayaking excursions in the surrounding Champagne region and visited various cultural monuments and centers such as the Sainte Clotilde Basilica and the medieval Palace of Tau, a sight of royal coronation dating back to the 8th century. Students’ skills were put to the test during an Escape Game and enjoyed getting to know each other over soccer games, typical French games such as pétanque, and preparing for the talent show that would take place in Paris on the last day of the programme.

During the final week in Paris, the group went on excursions through Paris’s most charming neighborhoods, such as Montmartre, where they visited the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, and the historic Marais district. Upon exploring the Latin Quarter, students strolled through the Jardin des Plantes, Paris’s famous botanical gardens (dating back 400 years) to arrive at the Grand Mosque for tea. Students were exposed to a wide range of museums and monuments throughout the capital, such as the Palais de Tokyo, the Pantheon, the Orsay Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, and the Montmartre Museum.
