Language Assessment

Pre-College Programme Language Assessments

Students who need to demonstrate their level in English or French and who do not have one of the other accepted forms of language verification, may pass a Summer School Pre-College Language assessment.

A language assessment requires approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete and should be taken without the help of a dictionary. Once completed, candidates must upload the English language assessment into the application tool, where it will be evaluated by a Summer School language instructor. The assessment should be uploaded as a single PDF file with all pages in the correct order to facilitate the evaluation process. Exceptionally, if the results of a test are inconclusive, candidates may be invited to an interview for further language evaluation.

These assessments are specific to the Summer School's Pre-College Programme and may not be used for applications to any Sciences Po degree programmes.

French Language Assessment

Admitted students whose first-choice elective class is taught in French (French as a foreign language or "La démocratie en Europe") will need to demonstrate their level of French, except for complete beginners.

  • French foreign language classes are offered at the complete beginner, beginner, and intermediate levels.
  • Students wishing to take "La démocratie en Europe" will need to demonstrate at minimum a B2 level of French.

Students should take the assessment that best reflects their French level. For more information on the language levels, download an explanation of the CEFR levels (in English and French, PDF, 140Ko).
