It is so easy to get a deal: you only need preparation, persuasion and patience. And flexibility. And creativity. And self-confidence. Self-control, too. And improvisation capacity. And...

Students who wish to acquire such skills are able to practice basic negotiating techniques in this course. They are exposed to a wide variety of scenarios and challenges, especially in an international context. They need to resort to negotiation to overcome them.

This way, theoretical explanations provided in each class are immediately put into practice through interactive exercises and negotiation models. Students are faced with various role-playing situations: trade negotiations place them in front of successive dilemmas, while a specific software instantly reveals the consequences of their own choices as well as the effects of the other teams’ decisions. Another negotiation model involves two fictitious countries that compete over the same group of islands: students use the available information, such as historical background, maps or data, and the practical skills developed throughout the course to try to find an agreement on this delicate situation.

Professor Biography

Barthélémy Michalon is a doctoral candidate in political science at Sciences Po Paris, working on digital surveillance. He also holds a Masters degree in European Studies from the College of Europe in Belgium.

He has taught International Relations at the university level at the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico for ten years and was in charge of a wide range of subjects, such as Geopolitics, International Negotiations, Europe, World History and Strategic Prospective.

Barthélémy Michalon wrote and published several case studies on foreign policy, diplomacy and geopolitics. He uses such materials quite frequently in his courses, along with technological tools.
