Europe in the World: Autonomy and Openness

As Portugal takes over the presidency of the European Council for the current semester, Dr Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, will present his priorities and will answer students’ questions. The discussion will chaired by Enrico Letta, Dean of PSIA.

Over the next months, national recovery and resilience plans will be submitted and approved at the European level. This will kick off the execution of Next Generation EU, the 750-billion euros European recovery plan. Portugal’s presidency will therefore be key to coordinate action in order to recover from the crisis.

Biography

Dr Augusto Santos Silva has been appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal in 2015 topping a long career in politics. He held several ministerial positions as Minister of Defence (2009–2011), Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2005–2009), Minister of Culture (2001–2002) and Minister of Education (2000–2001). He was a member of Parliament in 2002-2005 and 2011-2015. Dr Santos Silva holds a PhD in Sociology and has been a Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto.
