Rabah Arezki, former chief economist for the MENA region at the World Bank, will discuss the consequences for sub-Saharan African countries of the increase in food and energy prices coming on top of financial and debt tensions. He will present thoughts and answer questions on possible policy responses.

This event is organized by the Sciences Po Chair in Sovereign Debt. Hosted at PSIA, the Chair aims to provide leading expertise on government finance, constituting a unique academic reference point on public debt issues. The Chair is funded by one exclusive sponsor: Global Sovereign Advisory.

Rabah Arezki, Former chief economist for the MENA region, World Bank

Rabah Arezki is the former Chief Economist for Middle East and North Africa Region (MNA) at the World Bank. Prior to that, Rabah Arezki was the Chief of the Commodities Unit in the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund.

He also was a senior fellow at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, a non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution, an external research associate at the University of Oxford, a resource person for the African Economic Research Consortium and a research fellow at the Economic Research Forum.

Julien Marcilly, Chief economist, Global Sovereign Advisory

Julien has over 15 years of experience as an economist working in the private sector, providing clients with in-depth analysis of macroeconomic, country and sector risks.

Julien joined GSA as Chief Economist in 2021. Previously, he worked at Coface, a major player in the credit insurance industry, as Chief Economist and led a global team of economists. He began his career at Société Générale in 2007, before joining a New York-based asset management firm as an emerging markets economist.

Julien holds a PhD in economics from the University of Paris-Dauphine and is a graduate of ESCP Europe.

Jean-Pierre Landau, Associated Professor in the Department of Economics at Sciences Po and holder of the Sciences Po Chair in Sovereign Debt

Jean-Pierre Landau is an expert in monetary policy, financial stability and regulation, international monetary systems, and macro-prudential regulation. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Economics at Sciences Po (Paris). 

He has served as deputy governor of the Banque de France, executive director at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, DC.
