Be an actor on the Youth & Leaders Summit 2019!

For the very first time PSIA is inviting students to apply to participate in one of three panels as part of a Youth & Leaders Summit Simulation that will take place a few days before the actual Summit. This year’s theme will focus on:

“New Technologies: constructive or disruptive force in international affairs?”

Both to increase the Youth voice on this crucial topic and to enhance dialogue with the Leaders, PSIA is organising Student panels on the three main Youth & Leaders Summit topics related to New Technologies: Ethics and Democracy; Security; Economics.

During the simulation, to replicate the Summit sessions, selected students will be given five minutes each to present their research on the topic. A Q&A session will follow. The key findings of the three Student panels will be fed into the corresponding Leaders’ panels during the Youth & Leaders Summit. Moreover, Student panelists will have the chance to ask a question directly to the Leaders.

In the months ahead, all selected students will receive some training about how to conduct research for this type of exercise, including how they can use the skills and knowledge gained in support of their Master’s program requirements, e.g. for a written paper, Master’s thesis and/or Grand Oral.

Call for expression of interest

Students are asked to submit their CV and an expression of interest pitching some key points/areas which they feel would enhance the discussion.

First phase

Any applicant who submit a serious expression of interest will be selected for the first phase and will be invited to attend 1-hour preparation session with Professor Riva Kastoryano, who will provide guidance on how to research and prepare to contribute to one of the Student panels.

To close the first phase, students will produce a one-page executive summary of the key points they would contribute to their selected panel. The twelve students whose executive summaries would, in combination, make for the most stimulating and diverse panel will be selected to take part in one of the three Student panels.

Second phase

In the second phase, the twelve selected students will:

  • further explore the subjects and receive coaching from Professor Riva Kastoryano and support from a Sciences Po professor with expertise in their panel topic;
  • participate in a Student panel to take place a few days before the Summit in front of PSIA community;
  • have the chance to meet and ask a question directly to the Leaders of their parallel panel.

In the first phase, students must be available for 1-hour preparation session (in October), as well as some self-directed research and preparation of a one-page executive summary.

In the second phase, the final group of selected students must be available for a 2-hour preparation session (in December), as well as for the Students panels on the simulation day (see below). Additional tutorials (individual or in groups) may be organized depending on student needs and readiness. In addition, Student panelists must commit to undertaking a reasonable amount of time for further self-directed research and preparation of a 5-minute oral presentation.

The Youth & Leaders Summit will take place on Monday 21 January 2019 and the simulation day will be held a few days before (likely on 17 or 18 January).
