Reassessing class hierarchies in postindustrial societies:
a criterion and construct validation of EGP and ESeC across 31 countries

Carlo Barone

Full Professor, Sciences Po - OSC & LIEPP

Carlo BaroneThe EGP class schema is the dominant approach to class analysis in sociological research and it is particularly used in comparative research on social mobility, educational and labor market inequalities. But does EGP measure class hierarchies equally well across countries displaying different levels of economic development and different institutional environments? Using the data of the European Working Conditions Survey, we carry out the first comparative criterion and construct validation of EGP and we contrast it with results for the ESeC schema.

This presentation is based on a paper written with Smallenbroek Oscar and Hertel Florian (European University Institute).
