The term originally referred to the youth movement of the MRND, created after 1973 and tasked with supervising Rwandan youth in the development effort demanded by Juvénal Habyarimana, who introduced the collective interest work known as umuganda (the term Interahamwe means ‘those who work together’).

The Rwandan Popular Front, a guerrilla movement and then a political party, made its official appearance in December 1987. Several of its founding members, including Fred Rwigyema and Paul Kagame, took part in Yoweri Museveni’s struggle for power in Uganda and in the NRA (National Resistance Army) between 1981 and 1986. They then held positions as senior officers in the Ugandan Army, before being pushed aside precisely on account of their Rwandan origins.

Grégoire Kayibanda was President of the First Rwandan Republic. Born on May 1, 1924, in Tare, in the neighborhood of Kabgayi, to a catechist father, he attended the small seminary of Nyakibanda (Paternostre de la Mairieu, 1994: 39-66). This enabled him to become a teacher at Classe Institute near Kigali, where he taught until 1952 (Paternostre de la Mairieu, 1994: 75).

Born on March 8, 1937, the son of Jean-Baptiste Ntibazirikana, a former catechist (Munyarugerero, 2003: 151), he attended the small seminary of Kabgayi, before completing his studies in Latin and mathematics at Bukavu. His marriage to Agathe Kanziga, who came from an important family of land-owners in the north of the country, helped his social rise. He formed part of the first promotion from the Officers’ Schools of Kigali, which pledged its faith to Grégoire Kayibanda on December 23, 1961.

Théoneste Bagosora is regarded as the brains behind the 1994 massacres and their main organizer. Born on August 16, 1941, in Giciye (Bushiru), of which Juvénal Habyarimana was also a native, the son of a teacher, Théoneste Bagosora spent his whole career in the Army.

The term, which means ‘private council’ in the Rwandan language, refers to the immediate entourage of Agathe Kanziga, the wife of Juvénal Habyarimana, regarded as one of the key figures in the organization of the genocide. The key members of this informal structure came from the communes of Karago and Giciye in the prefecture of Gisenyi.

During the long twentieth century, defined here as beginning when the last precolonial mwami (King; plural: bami ) rose to power, the development of political violence in Rwanda emerged from two parallel but occasionally overlapping dynamics. The first is a period characterized by court violence during the two Rwandan Republics. The second, which is not as well known, is that of violence among peasants; the sequence of events involved is understandable, though the significance of the relationships spanning these events is more difficult to comprehend.
