Deputy Amir of Jamiat-e Ulema Islam in Punjab, he was a founder, along with Maulana Zia-ur-Rehman Farooqui, Maulana Eesar-ul-Haq Qasmi and Maulana Azam Tariq, the Anjuman Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan on September 6, 1985, later renamed Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), and became its supreme leader. The basic objectives of the SSP were to counter the rise of the Shia Tehreek-e Nifaz Fiqh Ja’frariya and to marginalize the prominent Shia feudal landowners in Jhang. Jhangvi was previously known for his infuriated speeches against Barelvis but then turned his hatred toward Shias. He was killed in Jhang in February 1990. His assassination led to a wave of sectarian violence across the country.
