23 candidates for the presidency of Sciences Po

The proposal committee established as part of the procedure for appointing the new President of Sciences Po received 23 applications for the post prior to the application deadline at midnight on 31 August.

The committee will now put forth one or more names to the Boards of Directors of the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques (FNSP) and the Institut d’Études Politiques (IEP), which shall be made public on 20 October. Once interviews have been held with the proposed candidate(s), a decision will be made by the two boards respectively by 9 November, for the Board of the IEP, and 10 November, for the Board of the FNSP. Should the two boards be in agreement as to the chosen candidate, their joint proposal shall be submitted to the appointing authority.

On 24 August, incoming students of Sciences Po’s School of Management and Innovation were invited to an inaugural lecture by Sir Nicholas Stern, director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment (LSE) and author of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. The conference, centering on the theme “Building Sustainable Development for the 21st Century: Policies, Institutions, Behaviour, Collaborations”, was an opportunity to welcome the students to the challenges and fundamental issues they will tackle during their studies and in their professional careers.

Pedagogic innovation in the pandemic: New opportunities in hybrid teaching

Enjoying a return to face-to-face classes, while harnessing the digital tools and experience gained during the pandemic: this is the pedagogic opportunity offering itself to many faculty members at the start of the new academic year. Gaspard Estrada, the Executive Director of Sciences Po’s Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OPALC) (fr), is no newcomer to hybrid teaching. He experimented in the format last semester for his course “How to conquer, govern, and quit power: methods and practice of political communication”, a module on political communication offered to students of the Master in Advanced Global Studies at PSIA in May 2021. Estrada told us more about his dynamic course, which was enriched by the new possibilities opened up by hybrid teaching.

Controversy: A User’s Manual

Most of the challenges facing society today are the subject of controversy. Studying these challenges using specific methodological tools was the objective of a controversy mapping training programme, Forccast, conducted by Sciences Po from 2012 to 2020. More than 20,000 students were trained by this innovative programme, initiated by Bruno Latour. Although the programme is now finished, the book Controverses mode d’emploi (Controversy: A User’s Manual) proposes an extension of the topic (Presses de Sciences Po, January 2021).
