Elkin Velásquez, Regional Director of UN Habitat in Latin America & the Caribbean will intervene in front of the students of the Urban School on Thursday on the theme : "Implementing the New Urban Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean"
Elkin Velásquez, regional Director of UN Habitat for Latin America and the Caribbean, will be presenting his experience and exchanging with Sciences Po Urban School students on both the challenges and the opportunities for supporting local governments with the implementation of the New Urban Agenda in the region.
UN-Habitat is the lead agency within the United Nations system for activities related to sustainable urbanization. Its mission is to promote the development of sustainable cities and human settlements "without leaving any place behind".
In collaboration with national governments, it is responsible for promoting and consolidating multilevel and multisectoral collaboration for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, with the participation of local authorities, private actors, non-governmental organizations and civil society. UN-Habitat contributes to the implementation of Agenda 2030 in cities, including Sustainable Development Goal (SDO) number 11, which consists of "making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable". It is also the focal point for the monitoring, evaluation and implementation of the New Urban Agenda, adopted at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) held in Quito, Ecuador, in 2016.
