Sciences Po will host the 12th conference of the European Graduate Network (EGN) that will take place in Paris from 11 to 12 May, 2020. The conference gives PhD students of the network universities the opportunity to present and discuss their research projects and to refine their theoretical and methodological approaches. It allows for in-depth discussions and thorough feedback since each contribution has its own dedicated one-hour seminar. Students who have passed the first year of their doctoral research are invited to submit an abstract. Contributions from all areas of social and political science are welcome (comparative politics, international relations, political theory and philosophy, political economy, political sociology, methodology, party politics, social movements, gender studies, public policy). Papers will reflect the current state of research and can be drafts of chapters or articles but should go beyond outlines of a research project.

Submit an abstract of maximum 400 words by 15 February 2020. Abstracts should include the research question, theoretical framework and methods used. They should also provide three to five keywords and a sub-disciplinary classification. Please also indicate your department, year of study as well as full contact details. Successful applicants will be informed by 15 March 2020. The full papers must be submitted by 30 April 2020.

The host institution offers accommodation and meals during the time of the conference. However, travel expenses have to be covered by participants and their respective universities. In case of co-authored contributions, only one of the authors may take part in the conference.

The conference consists of 6-8 panels, with 7-8 students each. The panels will reflect the topics, methods and approaches of the participants. Each panel will be chaired by senior members of faculty from the network universities. The conference starts on Monday 11 May with a welcome coffee followed by 6 parallel sessions. The conclusion of the first day will be a roundtable on “Doing a PhD: overcoming common challenges” followed by a dinner (place to be confirmed). Three more sessions will take place on Tuesday morning, and the conference ends after lunch.

Each student will present his/her paper and will also comment on the paper of another student in their panel. One hour will be spent on each paper. It is expected that participants read all other papers in their panel.
