Séminaire des doctorants en droit
For this month’s Law and Cinema Club, we sail through uncharted cinematic waters to find ourselves in present-day Mumbai, India. When a sewage worker is found dead by suicide, a local folk singer is arrested and accused, as his songs are believed to have inspired the worker to take his life. The trial that follows constitutes the backbone of Chaitanya Tamhane’s directorial debut and socio-legal commentary: Court (2015).
Through its realist depiction of the peculiar indictment, the film provides a detailed and fascinating insight into India’s legal system while at the same time indicting the system itself. Captivatingly doing so, the film won prizes at 15 renowned international festivals and will further shine in the Law and Cinema Club on.
