It is no secret that cinema is a powerful outlet to shape the public perception and opinion on any earthly phenomenon, including of course law and legality. For the April session of the Law and Cinema Club, we will explore how "cinematic legalism" impacts our view and judgement of an oft recurrent character and scenario: a woman judged by the law for an alleged crime against a man.

We do so by engaging with Pedro Almodóvar’s: >High Heels (Tacones Lejanos, 1991).

In now classic melodramatic Almodóvar fashion, the film revolves around the estranged relationship between a mother and daughter who both become incriminated after the murder of their common lover. To discuss the film, and the representation of women in "law and film" more generally, the Law and Cinema Club has invited Dr Orit Kamir. In her book "Framed: Women in Law and Film", Orit explores how the portrayal of "gender crimes" in 20th century cinema has constructed a cinematic jurisprudence, training audiences worldwide in patterns of judgment of women (and men) in such situations. About High Heels she wrote: "High Heels offers a radical and feminist alternative to the patriarchal image and ideal of Solomonic justice, which dominates our Judeo-Christian heritage, and the notion of good judging in particular".

For this special Law and Cinema Club we invite all to join us on Wednesday 28 April at 6 pm.

We hope to see you then!
