Commodity production in the heart of darkness

Commodity production and its legal regime were and are still central to the construction and maintaining of the periphery. Gold, cotton, bananas, rubber, coffee, rare metals... all produced in the Global South.

How do these commodities, singly and collectively, account for the drawing of territorial maps, the creation of imaginaries, the tracing of maritime trade and transportation routes servicing Western markets? How does international law further the creation of asymmetrical connectivity norms?
