This month we shine cinematic light on the laws and morals of academia. To learn how to lose family and alienate colleagues, one need not look further than Professor Eliezer Shkolnik, the main character in Joseph Cedar’s highly praised film: ‘Footnote’ (2011).
Set in modern day Jerusalem, Footnote follows the dramatic events in the lives of Professor Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik, father and son. An unlikely mistake by the committee of a prestigious academic award sets off Uriel on a mission to ‘do the right thing’ in a world in which egos, prestige, jealousy and envy are the norm.
