Moritz SCHULARICK was appointed to the French National Council on Productivity (Conseil national de productivité – CNP) this month.

The CNP was created in 2018 upon the recommendation of the Council of the EU based on the so-called Five Presidents’ Report. Most of the world’s advanced economies have seen a marked decrease in productivity since the 1970’s. The EU’s objective of sustainable and sustained growth is directly linked to the issues of productivity and competitivity.

The CNP sits within the institutional framework of France Stratégie, body which advises the Prime Minister’s Office. Its main objective is to analyse the determinants and evolution of productivity and competitivity in France. To do so the CNP relies on a panel of “qualified personalities”, with a two-year, renewable mandate.

The first President of the CNP was permanent faculty member Philippe MARTIN. Also from the Department, Xavier RAGOT, CNRS Professor and President of the OFCE, was also appointed as a qualified personality to the first formation of the CNP.

Moritz SchularickMoritz SCHULARICK, who joined the Department this year as Professor of Economics, was appointed by government decree February 11th, 2022 .

His research spans macroeconomics, finance, international economics and economic history. In 2018, he received the Gossen-Prize of the German Economic Association that is awarded every year to honour a German-speaking economist whose work has gained international renown.

Very recently, the German Research Foundation (DFG) honoured Moritz SCHULARICK with the 2022 Leibniz Prize for his outstanding research achievements in the field of economics. He is cited in particular by the DFG for (re)placing economic history at the heart of macroeconomics and for his insights into the causes of financial crises and the historical development of the distribution of wealth.

Congratulations to Moritz SCHULARICK!
