Gianmarco I.P. OTTAVIANO is Professor of Economics and holds the Achille and Giulia Boroli Chair in European Studies at Bocconi University. He is co-Director of the Research Unit on Globalization and Industry Dynamics of the Bocconi Centre for Applied Research on International Markets, Banking, Finance and Regulation (Baffi-CAREFIN), having previously directed the Trade Programme of the Centre of Economic Performance (CEP).
He has advised the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Finnish government and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
He is the co-author of many works in international trade, urban economics and economic geography. His recent publications focus on the competitiveness of firms in the global economy as well as the economic effects of immigration and offshoring on employment and wages. He was recently awarded an ERC Advanced Grant From micro to macro: aggregate implications of firm-level heterogeneity in international trade (MIMAT).

Esther DUFLO is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a co-founder and co-director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). Duflo is the Editor of the American Economic Review, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.
In her research, she seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor, with the aim to help design and evaluate social policies. She has worked on health, education, financial inclusion, environment and governance.
She has received numerous academic honours and prizes including 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (with co-Laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer), the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences (2015), the A.SK Social Science Award (2015), Infosys Prize (2014), the David N. Kershaw Award (2011), a John Bates Clark Medal (2010), and a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship (2009). With Abhijit Banerjee, she wrote Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty, which won the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award in 2011 and the recently released Good Economics for Hard Times.

Matthew GENTZKOW is the Landau Professor of Technology and the Economy at Stanford University. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and a former Co-Editor of American Economic Journal: Applied Economics.
He studies applied microeconomics with a focus on media industries. He received the 2014 John Bates Clark Medal, given by the American Economic Association to the American economist under the age of forty who has made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge. Other awards include the 2016 Calvó-Armengol International Prize, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes for Health, and Sloan Foundation, and a Faculty Excellence Award for teaching.

Michael P. LEUNG is Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to joining USC he was a Postdoctoral Associate at the M.I.T. Institute for Data, Systems, and Society, just after being awarded a PhD in Economics by Stanford.
He is specialised in econometrics and networks. He was notably awarded a NSF Grant for his project Statistical Theory for Economic Models of Network Formation.
