Digital matters: strategies for empirical research in economic sociology

Summary

The rapid digitization of social practices has significant consequences for economic lives. From online platforms reshaping labour and consumption practices, through new forms of creating, storing, and carrying value, to emerging ways of calculation in markets, firms, and households, the digital is a tectonic shift, arguably even more so in the times of pandemic. Economic actors face new types of problematic situations and power relations, carry new kinds of equipment and negotiate new kinds of infrastructures. How might those of us working in qualitative social research rethink our objects of study? How might scholars explore the digitally-augmented social spaces? This presentation by the team of the Max Planck Partner Group for the Sociology of Economic Life at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences will focus on some research strategies and their theoretical implications. Drawing on different empirical investigations - ranging from a household-based study of intimate accounting using home-made Excel spreadsheets, through an observation of court disputes around Uber, to an ethnography of smartphones - the presentation will problematize the way we study and understand the digital transformation.

Ce séminaire qui se tient les vendredis de 10h à 12h est organisé à la fois en présentiel dans les respect des mesures sanitaires actuelles et en distanciel via zoom.
