Research interests

In my doctoral research I addressed the theme “citizenship and immigration” through the analysis of the forms of mobilization and participation of migrants at the urban level (Venice, Treviso and Vicenza).

Thereafter, my focus shifted even more to the study of urban issues, and in particular:
- the urban effects (with particular reference to the processes of urban segregation) of general forms of stratification and inequality related to ethnicity, immigrants’ legal status, social class;
- the effects that spatial configurations have on social relations. In more detail, I have dealt with the effects in terms of social stigma of living in segregated urban areas inhabited almost exclusively by immigrants lower class. I also analyzed some “sensitive” neighborhoods, studying their perception by residents, workers and city users; their representation in public and media discourse; the policies and projects realized to improve the quality of life.

Within these themes, I also addressed the issue of Roma and Sinti. In particular, I developed a research project which analyzed an initiative of the Venice city council aimed at facilitating Roma and Sinti’s housing insertion.

Currently my research interests are focusing on a topic that combines my oldest and most recent research projects: the civic and political participation of Roma and Sinti in Italy.
