SPNU is thrilled to invite you to a new format of event, in partnership with the French Association for the UN (AFNU).

AFNU is organizing a colloquium on the end of plastic pollution on November 28th, in order to prepare for the next COP28 in Dubai. They missioned us to organize a preparatory round table on this question, with the approach of the state of international negotiations, the position of France and of the EU.

Our round table is going to take place on November 8th, from 7:15 pm to 9pm at Sciences Po.

We are really excited to announce as guest speakers:

  • Ambassador Pierre Henri Guignard, Secretary General of the COP21, former Ambassador of France in Argentina and Panama and special French Envoyee for the protection of tropical forests, will do an opening speech.
  • Diplomat Hugo Lequertier, French diplomat at Quai d’Orsay and negotiator for the judiciary constraining treaty aiming to end plastic pollution
  • Expert Lucien Chabason, from IDDRI, specialized on the OECD and UNEP, member of scientific council for the French Fund for the Environment and former Head of the Secretariat of the Barcelona Convention for the protection of the  Mediterranean Sea
  • Senior Lawyer Tim Grabiel, from the Environmental Investigation Agency

We are also waiting for other confirmations and will keep you updated !

It will be held in English.

After the opening speech, our guests and around 5 voluntary students will exchange and debate on the question of plastic pollution. The aim of this round table is to discuss the mechanisms that exist, the plastic governance, the proceedings of the negotiations and the limits of the current agreements. You may also want to discuss ideas and propositions of goals or concrete actions to end plastic pollution.

If you want to take part as one of our student speakers, please fill the following form, we will select the participants. Please note that if you are willing to take part actively in this event, we will help you prepare for it. We will send you documentation and organize coordination and study sessions before the debate. This is a really great opportunity for you to discuss more deeply with diplomats, share your views and ideas and exercise your debate and negotiation skills !

Finally, for those of you who do not wish to participate directly but who would like to attend the discussion as observers and note-takers, it will be open to an audience of around 20 people. This registration will be open later.

After the roundtable, SPNU will write a 2 pages recap for the colloquium of AFNU. Two student speakers will be selected to present the document and our discussion during the AFNU Colloquium of the 28th.

What has been the state of disinformation since the 7th October attack? Who are the actors, how is disinformation spread, and what are the observed impacts?

What was the landscape of disinformation concerning the conflict before? Has there been a significant transformation?

How is disinformation influencing public opinion or exacerbating tension in Israel, Palestine, and third countries? What are the repercussions on the conflict in real life?

Is disinformation a new subtle and powerful weapon in conflict warfare? How can we effectively address and mitigate it?

Since the 7th October attack, disinformation related to the israeli-palestinian conflict and the situation in Gaza has spread massively on social media platforms. This surge in disinformation poses significant risks, distorting the perception of events, shaping public opinions, and potentially fueling heightened tensions both within and beyond the countries involved in the conflict.

Let’s discuss this topic through a journalistic and a research point of view with Todd Helmus and William Marcellino, researchers at the RAND Corporation, both experts on disinformation and violent extremism and with Alessandro Accorsi, investigative journalist and Senior Analyst for the International Crisis Group.

The conference will take place online on Thursday 30th of November from 19h15 to 20h15.
