China-Vietnam: Legal Development Assistance as Foreign Policy
 
Speakers:
Prof. Dr. Matthew S. Erie is an Associate Professor, Member of the Law Faculty, and Associate Research Fellow of the Socio-Legal Studies Centre at the University of Oxford. Professor Erie is trained in both law and anthropology and studies comparative Asian law. He has written on Chinese law, Islamic law, and comparative international law. His current research project, “China, Law and Development,” funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant, examines China’s approach to law in its global development.
 
Dr. Hai Ha Do is a Research Fellow at the Asian Law Centre, Melbourne Law School and, previously, a Post-Doctoral Research Associate of the “China, Law and Development” project. His research focuses broadly on legal reform and transplantation in transitional socialist states, comparative and international labour law, constitutional law and the legal profession (with a particular emphasis on Vietnam).

East Africa: The Indo-Pacific’s Western Perimeter

 

Speakers:

David Willima works as a Research Officer on maritime security at the Institute for Security Studies in the Pretoria office. Before joining the ISS, David worked for the Environmental Learning and Research Centre at Rhodes University in South Africa as a research assistant on the International  One Ocean Hub research programme for transformative ocean governance. In April 2022, David participated as one of the 28 International youth Delegates and the only African youth delegate at the 7th Our Ocean Conference co-hosted by the U.S government and Palau in Koror, Palau and was recently an ocean delegate speaker at the prestigious One Young World 2022 Young leaders summit in Manchester. David has a background in Political and International Studies from Rhodes University. He is currently studying towards a master's in Security Studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pretoria, focusing on Ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean region.

 

Tshegofatso Johanna Ramachela has an Honours Degree in International Relations from the University of Pretoria, where she is currently completing her Masters's Degree in International Relations, specialising in Security Studies. Ms Ramachela is a Research Consultant for the Maritime Project at the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa. She is also a Research Consult on a project in the University of Pretoria’s Department of Political Science, where her focus is on BRICS vis-a-vis maritime security.

Diaspora at war :
Les diasporas biélorusse et ukrainienne entre méfiance et coopération

 

Un webinaire organisé conjointement par les programmes CORRIREF, AURA, Diaspora at War et BIELEXIL

Bien que la diaspora ukrainienne en Europe coopère activement avec les mouvements pro-démocratie et humanitaires dans le pays d'origine depuis l'Euromaïdan en 2014, l'invasion russe en 2022 a déclenché une forte montée du sentiment national et une mobilisation massive de tous les groupes de migrants ukrainiens et de personnes d'origine ukrainienne. Cependant, l'ampleur de l'engagement et les types d'activités des organisations diasporiques diffèrent fondamentalement selon le contexte du pays d'origine, comme je le montre à travers l'exemple de la France et de la Pologne. L'attaque de la Russie a également affecté les relations entre les diasporas ukrainienne et biélorusse, cette dernière se mobilisant depuis 2020 en réponse à l'élection présidentielle frauduleuse et aux représailles subies par les participants aux manifestations pro-démocratie. Dans la présentation, je montre comment, après les hésitations initiales et même l'hostilité de la part des réfugiés ukrainiens, les organisations de la diaspora biélorusse ont réussi à établir une coopération avec les organisations ukrainiennes. Dans les premiers mois de la guerre, les activités d'aide aux Ukrainiens et à l'Ukraine ont complètement dominé l'implication des organisations biélorusses. L’étude est basée sur 25 entretiens approfondis avec des représentants d'organisations biélorusses et ukrainiennes menés en France et en Pologne entre décembre 2022 et mars 2023.
