"China’s Africa Strategies from the Perspective of Party-State Relations"

Venue: Room G009, rez-de-chaussée, 28 rue des Saints-Pères - 75007 Paris

Speaker:
Takashi Nagatsuji, Research Associate at Waseda University

How does the Communist Party of China (CPC) interact with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)? This research untangles the China’s party-state relations in Africa by constructing and analyzing the original datasets covering the activities of both the CPC and the MFA. The field of China-Africa relations has been accumulating a number of studies. One missing piece in these studies is the CPC's engagement in a big picture of China's Africa Strategy. Although researchers were aware of the CPC's significance in their Strategy, the CPC's external work was difficult to be examined due to the lack of information. However, the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC) which is in charge of the CPC's external work publishes their activities. By shedding light on the IDCPC as well as the MFA, this research illustrates two types of party-state cooperation: Party-Led Cooperation and State-Led Cooperation.

The session will be held in English
