School teachers and the reproduction of educational inequalities:
some empirical evidence
Gianluca Argentin
Assistant Professor
Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milano
Department of Sociology
Several sociological analyses are focussed on the reproduction of social inequalities in education and a relevant amount of empirical studies paid attention to the key role played by family choices within the educational systems. On the other side, in the last decades, not so many quantitative studies investigated the role played by teachers in the reproduction of social inequalities. The seminar presents three studies regarding the Italian case, where teachers contribute to reinforce the advantages in education for children from higher social backgrounds. The key idea of the seminar is that sociological research need to come back to the investigation of teachers’ behaviours in order to better understand and effectively contrast social inequalities.
Gianluca Argentin is currently Visiting Professor in the LIEPP.
