Growth Without Expansion: Concentration Not Yet Congestion

When the 2013/14 academic year wrapped up in June, the Department of Economics counted 17 full-time members of faculty, 1 affiliated full-time professor on a temporary posting from Banque de France in the Department, 3 annual visiting professors, 2 post-doc researchers, 7 teaching fellows (ATERs) and 36 PhD candidates.

In July we were faced with a conundrum...

How were we going to welcome:
- Our new Associate Professor of Economics - Sergei GURIEV (New School for Economics of Moscow);
- Our four new Assistant Professors of Economics - Johannes BOEHM (LSE), Julia CAGÉ (Harvard), Stéphane GUIBAUD (LSE) and Joan MONRAS (Columbia) -- plus one new affiliated professor from Banque de France temporarily posted in the Department for the next 3 years -- Jean BARTHELEMY who succeeds Magali MARX.
- Three post-doc researchers - Daniel BOROWCZYK-MARTINS (project WASP), Mattia FOCHESATO (project MACROHIST), and Matthieu SOLIGNAC
- 5 new part-time ATERs
- 12 new PhD students in addition to the 29 existing PhD candidates

We don't quite know how we did it, but we managed to comfortably accommodate them all, together with the administrative staff required to manage the department and the four masters. Measuring tape and floor plan in hand, and with much gratitude for the due diligence and efficiency of Sciences Po's DGSI, the Department split existing offices and created two new ones in two unnecessary vast halls.

We are greatly honoured that so many distinguished and brilliant scholars from all over the world have chosen Sciences Po's Department of Economics as their "home". The Department now boasts 22 permanent faculty members.

The Department is equally happily sad to announce the temporary departure - of Professor Alfred GALICHON, who will be on sabbatical leave to undertake research at MIT as well as the departures of our Doctors, who have placed remarkably well on the International Job Market:

- ARCHANSKAÏA Elizaveta: Postdoctoral fellow at KU Leuven (Katolieke Universitat Leuven) since September 2014
- CHENG Gong: Economist/Policy Strategist, European Stability Mechanism, in Luxembourg since January 2014
- GEEROLF François: Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles since September 2014
- GOUSSE, Marion: Assistant Professor at Université Laval, Québec since September 2014
- HEMET Camille: Post-doc at the "Barcelona Institute of Economics" since January 2014
- SMAGGHUE Gabriel: Assistant Professor of Economics at Universidad Carlos III, Madrid since September 2014)
- TO Maxim: Post-doc at UCL (University College of London) since September 2014
