In 2015, New York City released the first long-term sustainability plan for a large city that explicitly incorporated the three pillars of sustainable development: economy, equity and environment. The same year, the UN adopted Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This session will discuss the extensive, collaborative and inventive process New York followed internally, as well as how both processes worked together and influenced each other. There will also be a brief examination of how other cities have begun using the SDGs voluntarily to frame and support their own objectives.
