Round Table "Resilient Cities: Paris/New York"*

Of late, cities in the world have increasingly addressed a strategy of resilience through innovative approaches. This is part of a raising awareness that global phenomena influence local policies and vice versa, with the consequent need “to ensure that our planet, our economy, and our city are fair, livable, and sustainable” (Mayor Bill Di Blasio). These approaches question the manifold functioning of cities, with the aim to improve their capacity “to learn from disasters to better anticipate them” (Mayor Anne Hidalgo).

How do scholars and policymakers understand the functioning of cities, what sense do they make of the climate change, and of the energy, economic and demographic transition? These broad questions will be addressed considering the two resilience plans underway in Paris and New York. The issue here is the development of urban policy and planning initiatives that are more congruent with how cities actually work.
