180424 - The European Union and Global Capitalism: Origins, Developments, Crisis
Ma, 2018-04-24 12:30 - 14:30
Séminaire Général du Centre d’études européennes et de politique comparée "The European Union and Global Capitalism: Origins, Developments, Crisis"
Tuesday 24 April 2018, 12.30 - 2.30 pm, Sciences Po, Room Goguel, 56 rue des Saints-Pères, 75007 Paris (Entrance through the 27 rue Saint-Guillaume)
In this book, Magnus Ryner and Alan Cafruny draw on critical theory to introduce readers to ways of exploring questions about the EU from a political economy perspective, questions like: Does the EU help or hinder Europe’s ‘social models’ to face the challenges of globalization? Does the EU represent a break from Europe’s imperial past? What were the causes of the Eurozone crisis?
Magnus Ryner, Professor of International Political Economy, Head of Department, King’s College London
Magnus Ryner’s research and teaching have for long dealt with the international political economy of advanced capitalism. Making use of a holistic approach to social analysis that goes beyond disciplinary
boundaries, his publications explore contemporary questions of human welfare by relating micro-processes of work and production to macro-
developments of world order via changing configurations of the state, civil society and in international organisation. In recent years, his focus has been on the political economy of the EMU and on the Eurozone crisis. His book The European Union and Global Capitalism: Origins, Developments, Crisis, co-authored with Alan Cafruny (Palgrave, 2016), is his latest contribution to the field.
