Me, 2017-11-22 17:00 - 19:00

Seminar Cities are back in town "Understanding Inequality and Governance in the Metropolis: The concept of place Equality Regime"

Wednesday 22 November 2017, 5 - 7 pm, Sciences Po, LIEPP’s Conférence Room, 254 boulevard Saint-Germain, 75007 Paris

Extended, diversified metropolitan regions have become the dominant form of human settlement. Disparities among metropolitan places figure increasingly in wider trends towards growing social inequalities. I argue that ‘regimes of place equality’ - understood as the mechanisms that organize fiscal solidarity among local jurisdictions in charge of providing services to citizens - are an increasingly critical component of modern welfare states and territorial administration. In my presentation, I will present the main findings of the International Metropolitan Observatory (IMO) project’s multi-country investigation into how regimes of place equality contribute to maintain or even reinforce territorial disparities in taxes, services and goods between metropolitan places, or mitigate and compensate for these disparities.
